Snuff bottles are most probably an evolution of the small medicine bottles that are common from an earlier period. The earliest dated piece is 1653. These tiny small bottles usually contain traditional Chinese paintings of landscapes, people, animals, flowers, mountains.

An artist must possess great talent and skill to paint such detailed images in such a tiny space to work on, and these bottles are a particular delight for tourists in the antique districts of Beijing or Shanghai to behold.
